Understanding the Capital One Routing Number

At first glance, the Capital One routing number doesn’t say much, but each number has a specific function.

The first section is four digits long and represents the Federal Reserve Processing Symbol, with digits one and two identifying which of the 12 Federal Reserve Districts the financial institution resides in. For example, if you see 02, you know that the bank is located in the District of New York. An 11 would indicate that the business is in the Dallas District. Digits three and four identify the regional processing center and its location.

The next four digits identify the bank, in this case, Capital One. The last digit is called the “check digit” because it is used to validate the routing number.
