History of three stages of compilation of Quran

The Quran is the holy book for the people who follow the religion of Islam. Holy Quran was revealed on Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H) fourteen hundred years ago. The Holy Quran we see today was not the same, or we can say it was not compiled by that time. Some so many people read the Quran and have memorized it as the memories of the Arabs were so strong. However, we know that the Holy Quran was not compiled properly at that time.

There were so many aspects that led to the compilation of the Holy Quran. There were three stages for the compilation of the Holy Quran. We will discuss and understand the process deeply in this article. The holy Quran went through three main processes and was formed in the way we see it today.

Compilation of the Holy book in the life of Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H)

The holy Quran was revealed completely during the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H). It was also available in written form at that time. Whenever Allah Almighty revealed any verse, Holy Prophet Muhammad(P.B.U.H) would tell to write down that verse. Those verses were written on Leaves of palm, leather, stones, papers. The verses of the Quran were revealed as per to the time and condition, the arrangement of verses, names of Surah, and all together, Allah Almighty himself revealed everything. The holy Quran was revealed completely in the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H).

Fear of losing the Holy Quran

As we have mentioned above, the memory of Arab people was so strong, and that was the reason how so many people at that time has hifz the Quran. So at that time, they didn’t feel the compilation of the Quran in the form of the book. But there was an intense battle that was taken place at yamamah. In that battle, many people who were companions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) and those people who were also Hafiz e Quran was martyred. That event has created the fear of losing the Holy Quran.

Compilation of the Quran during the reign of Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A)

After the intense battle, only a few people who had Hifz the Quran were left. Hazrat Umer ibne Khattab felt very anxious about the situation. If this had been continued, then a bigger portion of the Holy Quran could have been lost. His thoughts were conveyed to the Caliph Hazrat Abu Bakr (R.A) and asked for permission to compile the Quran in the form of a book. At first, he didn’t agree to that as Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) didn’t do this in his lifetime. But later, then Hazrat Bakr (R.A) agreed to the matter. The Quran was then compiled completely in the form of a book, and Hazrat Umer ibn Khattab was the custodian of the compiled book of the Quran.

In the reign of Hazrat Usman (R.A), most people have accepted Islam. Those people were not native Arabs and did not know about the Arabic language. People started having conflicts over the pronunciation as everyone had a different language and pronunciations. Hazrat Usman (R.A) came to know about these problems, and he had thought maybe this conflict would end up dividing Muslims. After that, he ordered copies of the Quran in a Quraish accent as the Quran was revealed in that accent. Then copies of The Quran were sent to all Islamic republics. This ended the conflict of pronunciations in people, and everyone then started reading the same Quran.

From the day the Quran was revealed, no single change has been made in history. Even when the Quran was being compiled, there were high precautions. Everybody took care that there would not be the slightest bit of change in any verse. Allah Almighty has promised to take care of the Quran, but this is also our responsibility to take care of the Quran. We all should learn and memorize the Quran, so there would not be any problem taking care of the Quran; the more people will hifz Quran, the less the need for copies of the Quran.
