5 Pet Insurance Companies

5 Pet insurance companies

if your pet gets sick or needs emergency surgery, could you cover unexpected expenses?

You pay for health insurance, life insurance, home insurance, and car insurance. Why shouldn’t you do the same with your pet? Although I have never had to use my coverage (knock on wood), I am happy to pay the small fee each month.

While there are affordable options for veterinary care, with pet insurance, you never have to worry about choosing between treatment that could save your life and your bank account.

Major Pet Insurance Companies

Here is a complete review of the best pet insurance companies in 2020.

1. Healthy Paws Pet Foundation and Insurance

The first pet insurance company we are going to talk about is called Healthy Paws. After hearing about a positive experience a friend had with them, this is the company I chose as well.

Their policies allow you to be reimbursed for 70%, 80%, or 90% of the total veterinary bill once you meet your annual deductible.

The higher the rebate level, the more you pay each month. You can choose from a monthly deductible of $100, $250, or $500. Healthy Paws policies have no incident limits and no annual coverage limits.

One downside to Healthy Paws policies is that they don’t cover regular immunizations, routine exams, heartworm prevention, or regular checkups.

And unlike other insurers, Healthy Paws doesn’t offer any type of wellness plan as an add-on.

But for any covered condition, Healthy Paws coverage includes:

  • Diagnostic tests (x-rays, blood)
  • Hospitalization and treatments while you are there
  • surgeries
  • Prescription drugs

You can also use any licensed veterinarian and submit your qualified expenses online.

Are there maximum limits?

There is no maximum limit to the duration of your coverage. Even if you have $20,000 in expenses, they would still cover 70%, 80%, or 90%.

Most other pet insurance providers have limits. These will lower your monthly cost but will also lower your protection. The lack of limits is one of the biggest benefits of Healthy Paws life insurance.

Are hereditary and congenital conditions covered?

Any hereditary condition is eligible for coverage as long as symptoms occur after enrollment and waiting periods. These conditions include things like bladder stones, epilepsy, heart disease, cleft palate, or limb deformities.

As a side note, some breeds are prone to hip dysplasia and are covered at no additional cost as long as your pet is under the age of six and has no clinical signs or symptoms during the initial period.

Not included in the coverage

  • Exam fees
  • pre-existing conditions
  • Dental care
  • behavioral treatment
  • Specific diets for pets
  • Nursery or boarding school
  • Cremation or burial (euthanasia is covered when medically necessary)

The Bottom Line on Healthy Paws Pet Insurance

A healthy Paw is a reliable option with no coverage limits, which is why I chose it. Unfortunately, Healthy Paws does not cover preventive care and a routine wellness program is not offered.

Since I have this pet insurance, I can tell there is another drawback. The second year, the price went up, even though we had no complaints in the previous 12 months.

2. Progressive pet insurance

Yes, Flo from Progressive even has insurance for your pet’s medical expenses.

Progressive has two different plans for your cat or dog: Basic Pets Wellness Program and BestBenefit.

Accident and illness plans BestBenefit

This is the most comprehensive plan that Progressive offers. It covers everything related to accidents and illnesses, including chronic conditions such as cancer.

This plan also allows for the treatment of hereditary and congenital conditions. Accidents, hospital stays, surgeries, and emergency visits outside of business hours are also covered.

Accident Only Plan

The Accident Only Plan does not cover anything related to illness. Accidents include things like:

  • Broken bones
  • Injuries from being hit by a car
  • bite wounds
  • lacerations

Wellness Routine Care Plans

Unlike Healthy Paws, Progressive offers a wellness plan. This plan is less expensive but has limitations, including immunizations, annual exams, and flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.

The Wellness Routine Care Plan is allowed as a supplement to BestBenefit and the Accident Only Plan.

Not included in the coverage

  • pre-existing conditions
  • Preventive, elective, and cosmetic procedures.
  • Food, including prescription foods
  • Boarding and toilet

cost options

Progressive Pet Insurance has three different plans that differ based on the percentage you want to pay out of pocket. Once you have met your deductible, you can choose your coverage limit (70%, 80%, or 90%).

The Bottom Line on Progressive Pet Insurance

It is very similar to Healthy Paws in that it has the same deductible and reimbursement options and no maximum limit. In addition, it also offers a wellness plan that you can add to any plan.

3. Hug

Embrace Pet Insurance also offers several plans that promise nose-to-tail coverage for your dog or cat. As with other plans, you choose the annual maximum payment, deductible, and reimbursement percentage.

Each pet on the policy may have a different deductible, reimbursement rate, and maximum limit.

This is great if you have multiple pets of different ages. You can use this plan with all of your cats and dogs to receive a multi-pet discount.

Nose-to-tail accident and illness coverage

Like other pet insurers, there is no network, which means you can take your pet to the vet of your choice. You will need to print your personalized claim form before your appointment.

Once you arrive, have a member of the veterinary practice staff fill out the claim form. You can then email or fax it, or upload it online.

This is what it includes:

  • congenital conditions
  • chronic conditions
  • cancer treatments
  • Exam fees
  • behavior therapy
  • diagnostic tests
  • Emergency and specialized care
  • Hospitalization and surgery
  • Prosthetic limbs and devices, including mobility aids
  • Dental disease (up to $1,000 per year, only available in certain states)

Alternative therapies are covered and, in most states, take-home prescription drug coverage is available. This is only available in certain states, so check the Embrace Pet Insurance website to make sure yours is included.

wellness rewards

Wellness Rewards is a flexible preventive health care plan you can add. It will reimburse you for grooming, veterinary, and training needs.

The program rewards you with “free” money for being proactive about your pet’s well-being.

There are three options for reimbursement of Wellness Rewards. You can choose the limits of $250, $450, or $650 per policy year.

The $650 option is best for puppies and kittens, as their costs tend to be higher. You can also change your Wellness Rewards limit each policy year to meet your pet’s needs.

Unfortunately, the Wellness Rewards program is not available for standalone purchases. You must have full coverage from end to end to qualify.

Not included in the coverage

  • Some pre-existing conditions. (Curable pre-existing conditions are covered if they resolve or are symptom-free for 12 months from the original date of onset.)
  • cloning
  • stem cell therapy
  • Injuries from fighting, racing, cruelty, or negligence
  • cosmetic procedures

They also offer a very useful comparison tool that will allow you to compare Embrace with other pet insurers.

The other pet insurers include:

  • 24PetWatch
  • AKC Pet Insurance
  • ASPCA health insurance
  • figure
  • healthy legs
  • nationwide
  • PetFirst
  • pet plan
  • pets better
  • Trupanion

Unlike many pet insurers, Embrace also has a healthy pet deductible, which will reduce your annual plan fee by $50 each year that you don’t receive a claim reimbursement.

The bottom line on Abrace Pet Insurance

This plan is great because you can customize it for your pet and your budget. With its comparison tool, healthy pet deductible, and Wellness Rewards, this may be your best pet insurance option.

4. USAA Pet Insurance (issued by Embrace Pet Insurance)

USAA has partnered with Embrace Pet Insurance to provide customers with great coverage at special discount rates due to its relationship with the military.

If you have served in the military or have a relative who is a member of USAA, you may qualify for USAA pet insurance. It’s a big deal for people who have served in the military.

The policy will cover everything that Embrace pet insurance normally covers, such as accidents, illnesses, and routine veterinary care.

The Bottom Line on USAA Pet Insurance

Since it is part of Embrace Pet Insurance, it seems like a great option for military members to explore.

5. The best for pets

Pets Best Pet Insurance was founded in 2005 by a veterinarian and insurance expert. Their goal was (and is) to help pet owners afford to care for their pets, no matter the cost.

Pets Best has three different plans to choose from: Essential, Plus, and Elite.

Each plan will reimburse you for up to 90% of your health care costs and has a $250 deductible. The plans also come with an unlimited coverage option, but you can choose a limit on your coverage if you want.

Reimbursement and deductible amounts are also flexible, depending on what you’re looking for. Monthly premiums for each plan vary based on:

  • The type of pet you have
  • The breed and size of your pet.
  • The age of your pet

And possibly other factors. Pets Best also has a 24/7 veterinary helpline for all of its customers.
